چکیده
This book is one of a series developed for undergraduate medical students that fully integrates basic science, clinical medicine, and surgery featuring clinical cases, graphic narratives, and a selection of learning tools. The book comprises 260 pages, divided into 9 chapters. Each chapter starts with pre-assessment questions or a clinical case that helps to engage the reader and focus on the important educational points; answers to these questions can be found at the end of each chapter. The book covers all major topics for a basic course from types of biochemical reaction, enzyme, and cofactor to fluid and electrolyte balance nutrition. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to cellular structure and function, biochemical reactions and body fluids, and clearly explains key concepts and mechanisms to help the student link basic science to clinical cases. This is followed by systems-based chapters (2-6), which describe the structures such as proteins, lipids, nucleic acid, carbohydrates, and processes like hemoglobin metabolism that highlight normal functions. Chapter 7 and 8 describe fluid and electrolyte balance and nutrition. Lastly, chapter 9 provides revision aid and self-assessment for students with 80 multiple questions in clinical SBA (school-based assessment) format in line with the recurrent exam format. The biggest strength of this book lies in how basic biochemistry is explained in system based chapters divided into core principles followed by clinical presentations and scenarios that emphasize its relevance in real life and clinical medicine. The layout is well thought out and visually engaging, which makes it easier to take in. It is a great book and an excellent resource to have, reasonably priced, for the intended audience, especially medical students, whom this book would aid in building basic concepts of biochemistry in the preclinical years in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the reader yet provides the necessary information.

Effects of citral on oxidative stress and hepatic key enzymes of glucose metabolism in streptozotocin/high-fat-diet induced diabetic dyslipidemic rats
Objective(s): Phytochemicals such as polyphenols, alkaloids, and terpenoids, protect against the development of early stages and complications of diabetes mellitus according to various reports. The aim of this study was to measure the anti-dyslipidemic and anti-diabetic effects of Citral on high-fat-diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic dyslipidemic rats and to see also its effec...
متن کاملThe effect of adropin on lipid and glucose metabolism in rats with hyperlipidemia
Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate, for the first time, whether the effects of low-dose adropin administration is effective in rats with hyperlipidemia. Materials and Methods: Twenty one Wistar albino female rats were randomly divided into 3 groups and fed with high-fat diet for 4 weeks to establish the hyperlipidemia model. Meanwhile, adropin was administrated intraperitonealy...

A new Open Access journal, Nutrition & Metabolism (N&M) will publish articles that integrate nutrition with biochemistry and molecular biology. The open access process is chosen to provide rapid and accessible dissemination of new results and perspectives in a field that is of great current interest. Manuscripts in all areas of nutritional biochemistry will be considered but three areas of part...
متن کاملRegulation of Bone Metabolism
Bone is formed through the processes of endochondral and intramembranous ossification. In endochondral ossification primary mesenchymal cells differentiate to chondrocytes and then are progressively substituted by bone, while in intramembranous ossification mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiate directly into osteoblasts to form bone. The steps of osteogenic proliferation, differentiation,...
متن کاملMolybdenum Cofactor Biology and Disorders Related to Its Deficiency; A Review Study
Background: Molybden, as a vital and essential micronutrient is directly involved in the metabolism of other elements including carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen. Molybdenum alone is not biologically active unless it binds to specific cofactors. Except for the bacterial nitrogenase, which contains molybdenum-Iron complex, molybdenum cofactor (Moco) is considered as the bioactive component placed in ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Piper Guineense versus Sesamum Indicum Aqueous Extracts on Lipid Metabolism and Antioxidants in Hypercholesterolemic Rats
Background: Piper guineense (PG) and Sesamum indicum (SI) have been shown to be rich sources of antioxidants and other health benefits; hence, we evaluated the impact of its consumption in hypercholesterolemic model on lipid metabolism. Methods: Forty-eight animals were divided into eight groups of six rats each. Rats were given cholesterol (40 mg/0.3ml), PG and SI extract (100 and 200 mg/kg), ...
